Near or Far
This series of pictures are all about fireworks in Beijing in recent years and they were taken between 2019 and 2022, of which some were taken outside the Fifth Ring Road on New Year's Eve and during Lantern Festival, when fireworks were not entirely banned in Beijing; other pictures are almost all related to some big major events including the 70th anniversary of the founding of People’s Republic of China in October 2019, the 100th anniversary of the founding of Communist Party of China in July 2021 and 2022 Winter Olympics.
These pictures are not just about the fireworks. What’s more important, is the people who watch them, and how they approach these events. In general, seeing fireworks in Beijing is not an easy and everyday thing for most people. When I took these pictures, I did not always try to look for the best angle for fireworks, but sometimes tried to observe the event from the perspective of an ordinary resident in Beijing who may think fireworks are important or not, same for associated major big events.
That’s why I named this project “Near or Far”.
